5/31 Tipon Ruins

The Tipon Ruins

The stairs that the Incans used to get from level to level

Today we got to sleep in a little bit (we didn’t get much sleep in Taray because our room was on the common area which was always noisy). After breakfast we met the new student who is living here now. She is from Texas and is 33. She speaks Spanish almost fluently and teaches in a Spanish immersion school. Then we went to Tipon on the bus and hiked a good hour and a half uphill to get to the ruins. The ruins are famous for having water canals, a reservoir, and storage areas. It also had steps to get on to the upper levels made by putting long stones into the wall so they stuck out (see picture). I also took pictures of the many interesting flowers. While there, Libby did a handstand against a wall with some people we met on the trail. On the way down she slid and sprained her ankle.

When we were almost down the trail and about the get on the dirt road to walk to the bus stop. We saw a car race going on and were told that we couldn’t go onto the road until the race was over. The cars were skidding around the sharp switchbacks going down from the mountain across the valley from us. After the cars passed there were huge clouds of dust (that lasted from 15+ minutes). After the cars were done, we walked back into the town, bought a bag of the large popcorn and got onto the bus. That evening we watched SeƱora Gladys play volleyball. She is in the masters league and is a really good player.
